You assume visitors to Broadbeach are rarely thinking about the blues.

The Gold Coast suburb is more often busy attracting surfers, shoppers and holiday-makers to its beachside wonderland. But Broadbeach will get an additional boost this month from an influx of eager blues fans.

The Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is an annual event hosting international and Australian talent across a series of outdoor stages, parks and venues throughout the suburb. You can expect to hear a range of blues-inspired music, while you stroll through a precinct full of restaurants, cafes and bars. Running over four days this year, the festival will be headlined by critically-acclaimed jazz trumpeter James Morrison and his Motown Experience performance. He appears alongside US names in Robben Ford – who’s collaborated with the likes of Miles Davis, George Harrison and Joni Mitchell – and Mississippi bluesman R.L. Boyce, who will appear with Dom Turner, better known as founder of the Backsliders.

Eight-piece Japanese funk orchestra Osaka Monaurail will bring the party, while Emma Donovan and The Putbacks, Mia Dyson, Karise Eden, Jimi Hocking, Jason Delphin, 8 Ball Aitken and more will lead a local showcase. This year will also see the introduction of a brand new park stage in Federation Park, which will host a program of gritty, off-kilter acts.
