Wide Open Road Byron Bay
Wide Open Road is one of Melbourne’s best-known cafes and roasteries. Since opening in 2009, it now supplies cafes around the country. And in 2020, it opened its first location outside Victoria: Wide Open Road Byron Bay.
The Byron outpost has traded in the exposed bricks and warehouse feel of the Melbourne mothership in favour of a more beach-appropriate look. Large umbrellas shade the area out front, while inside, terrazzo table-and-countertops keep things light. Wooden window frames, panelling and benches are reminiscent of the headquarters back home.
Coffee is understandably the focus here. The house blend at this location is the Harvest Moon, which is fully certified organic. A number of other Wide Open Road signature roasts are available, too. There are also rotating single-origin options for espresso and filter.
Food is largely takeaway-focused. There’s a regularly changing range of bagels, including cream cheese, avocado and rocket; pastrami and Swiss cheese; and salmon, scallion cream cheese and capers. There’s also chia pudding and a seasonal granola.
